Tuckerman (Joseph) is born in Boston.

January 18, 1778

Joseph Tuckerman graduates from Harvard College, becomes a Congregational minister in Chelsea, and converts to Unitarianism in approximately 1800. He goes to work for the American Unitarian Association, assisting the poor of Boston, and becomes known as the “Father of American Social Work.” A founder of the Boston Society for the Prevention of Pauperism and the Boston Farm School, Tuckerman dies in Cuba on April 20, 1840.
